Mister K. Webcomic

Hold on, I have to show you something.
It’ll sound like some crazy coked-up dream, but it’s all true, I swear. In the making of „The Beauty Pageant”, a total of 647 files have been created. That’s 3.08 Gigabytes of content. I know, this sounds weird, but follow me on this one. Of those 647 files, 51 were written story (41.57 Mb) and 566 files are images (2.97 Gb). Nobody knows what the rest is. NOBODY! I’ve asked. And here it comes: There is a clear correlation between the average file size and the page numbers! (r = 0.814) That is, files used to concoct yet another page. Secret non-papers, evidence, … you name it! It is not that they have been producing more and more pictures per page. I’ve checked. The number of pictures produced stays quite random. It means that they have been HIDING EVER MORE SECRET MESSAGES between the bytes to brainwash you into servitude! At the first glance, this all seems very harmless. But look at how the word “CONSPIRACY” is suspiciously missing! As if they didn’t want us to know … PK ;)
Have you ever wondered what the suspect’s dog is trying to show us on his blackboard in the last but one panel of page #09? Well, here it is:
Our mistake was working on two ideas at the same time. One idea was to show Mister K. implementing the five steps of “Method K.”, as announced on page #13. The other was to make “Method K.” immediately fail after the first step. Eventually, we ended up with a strange mix of both ideas. It’s somewhat like David Mamet’s (?) famous example of having two excuses for not having done your homework: “Because I was trapped in a sewer for 8 hours and the dog’s eaten it.” PK
We draw this comic series in a team of three. Each of us carries out a different step in the process.
The basis is a written story. That’s what I, Philipp, do first. I provide a basic structure based on an idea. This idea stays somewhat malleable. Michael Meyer does all of the sketching. He provides the storyboards and the more concrete pencil drawings. He is also a tattoo artist, who pays a lot of attention to detail. Michael Schneider then inks those drawings. He assembles the panels and does the lettering. He used to paint with an actual brush using real ink but switched to his computer completely. In the end, I add the shades to the ink lines Michael has drawn.
“The Beauty Pageant” did not start off with any structure. For the next story called “The Taxi Driver”, we’ve decided to focus more on that. This involves separating the story into panels, looking for ideas for jokes, and making sure we have a good story arc, before we start producing the panels.
That's what we are working on at the moment. Till next time! PK
When we finally decided to produce a comic book, we had a colored version in mind that looked like this:
However, we didn’t really think that this would grasp the film noir look we wanted to, so we decided to just use black and white.
We also limited ourselves to only 3 shades of grey. This sometimes poses a challenge for very complex panels. But most of the time, it creates pictures that also work as thumbnails. Their basic shapes are recognizable even from a distance. In our next story, we may add one spot color to the comic: Until then, I wish you all colorful lives! PK
